FEDERAL COURT CASES

Federal court complete acquittals from all charges in jury trials include U.S. v. Metzger, alleging mail fraud, conspiracy, and other charges made by the Corps of Engineers against his client in building Gilliard Island in Mobile Bay, U.S. v. Miller, a Mobile police officer tried for brutality and civil rights abuses, and U.S. v. Young and others in one of the largest marijuana conspiracies ever in the Southern District of Alabama. In the case of U.S. v. Sanders, a 375 kilogram cocaine conspiracy, Sanders was acquitted by a jury of all charges and later was the first person charged with capital murder in the Southern District of Alabama since the death penalty was reinstated. In U.S. v.Livingston, the accused was completely acquitted on all charges, that case being brought in the Middle District of Alabama alleging conspiracy and multiple counts of Medicare fraud. In February of 2012 a federal jury in the Southern District of Alabama acquitted Chris Vernon of conspiracy in an alleged Medicare kickback scheme. Vernon was a target defendant as co-owner of a national specialty pharmacy where the Government claimed 29 million dollars in forfeiture of assets and sought extensive incarceration of Vernon. At trial all allegations against him were either acquitted by a jury or dismissed by the Court. In June of 2015 a federal jury acquitted the Mobile County Deputy License Commissioner of nine counts of public corruption, totally exonerating her of all charges. In May of 2018 a Baldwin County medical doctor was acquitted by a federal jury on all thirteen counts of his indictment for illegal distribution of controlled substances and healthcare fraud involving the prescribing fentanyl patches to the former lead guitarist of rock band 3 Doors Down.

These results are among Mr. Knizley’s other complete acquittals or otherwise successful outcomes of trial litigation in the Federal system.
